摘要：早期来华美国传教士的书信传记作品呈现了其从事汉学研究的历程,传教士本人的中国观不等同于他们所编写汉学作品中透露出来的中国观念。从基督教在华传播的脉络来看,传教士个人所开展的汉学研究具有强烈的现实需求和实用目的,克服传教中的语言交流障碍是其学习汉语的原始动力,消除传教中的文化、政治壁垒则是其汉学研究的终极目的。尽管具有基督教扩张的强烈意向,但其汉学探索往往也会造成不曾逆料的文化后果。随着对中国传统文化研究的深入,在有的传教士那里出现了文化认同的滑动,逐渐生发出对知识的客观性追求,从而赋予了汉学研究以现代学术的因子。
The letters and biographies of the early American missionaries to China have presented the course of their engagement in sinology research.The missionaries’personal views on China are not the same as those in their writings.From the perspective of the dissemination of Christianity in China,their personal sinology research is of strong practical needs and purposes.Overcoming the language barrier in their missionary activities is the original motivation for them to learn Chinese,eliminating cultural and political barriers in their missionary activities is the ultimate goal of their sinology research.Despite the strong intention of Christian expansion,American missionaries’quest for sinology has often led to unanticipated cultural consequences.With the in-depth study of Chinese traditional culture,there has existed a slip of cultural identity among some missionaries,and the objective pursuit of knowledge has gradually emerged,thus endowing sinology research with modern academic factors.
